At North by Northeast, we rely entirely on volunteers to staff our weekly clinics. Many of our new patients have been looking for help for a long time and walk through our door expecting to find more obstacles to getting what they need. Seeing people leave with relief and a smile on their face makes it all worthwhile. While none of us alone can fix the problems with our health care system, we can make a real difference in people’s lives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering at North by Northeast

1.What do your volunteers do?

NxNE has several positions for volunteers, depending on your skills and interest, as well as our current needs. Our Monday and Thursday evening clinics are staffed by volunteers, including:
    Clinicians (MDs, DOs, NPs)
    Nurses (RNs and LPNs)
    Medical Assistants
Patient Advocates (social workers or others knowledgeable about community resources)
    Front Desk/Intake

We also occasionally have a variety of special projects for volunteers, including gardening, office help, running errands, etc. Please see below for a list of current volunteer needs.

2. How often can I volunteer?

Our volunteer commitment varies a bit depending on the position. Most of our clinic night volunteers serve once a month. A typical Monday or Thursday evening shift is three hours; the clinic is open from 5:30pm-8:30pm, with clean-up completed by 9:00. Special projects are on an ongoing or one-time basis depending on our need.

3. What volunteer positions are you looking to fill now?

We are currently looking for a volunteer Garden Project Coordinator to help us prepare and plan for a wonderful project for 2010—transforming the empty lot next door into a flourishing garden for our clients, patients & volunteers. This will be a joint project of the three tenants of the Garlington Center—NxNE, Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare and SMYRC—and we’re looking for a skilled, enthusiastic volunteer to help us out with planning over the next 3-4 months. Download the application below for more information:

We are also currently accepting volunteer applications for clinicians (MDs, DOs and NPs) and nurses (RNs and MAs). At this time we are not in need of front desk or patient advocate volunteers. However, please continue to check back if you are interested in volunteering as our needs fluctuate.

Please feel free to contact our Clinic Manager, Suzy Jeffreys at 503-287-4932 or (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), if you have a special interest or skill you might like to use as a volunteer; sometimes we don’t even know what we need until a generous individual approaches us with a desire to help!

4. How do I apply?

To apply for a specific volunteer position,  download and print one of our volunteer applications below. Applications can be emailed, faxed, or mailed to the clinic (see contact numbers below).
