OPB’s Think Out Loud Features Dr. Jill Ginsberg On June 24 OPB’s Emily Harris spoke with Dr. Alvin Poussaint about his views and discussed how health disparities impact African Americans and other people of color. Poussaint is best known for his ongoing partnership with comedian Bill Cosby. From his days consulting on the Cosby Show to the new book they wrote together—Come On, People: On the Path From Victims to Victors—Cosby and Poussaint say African Americans need to to take responsibility for their health and their futures. Angels in Our MidstGail Meyer of the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians was so inspired by the story of North by Northeast that she designed a new column for the monthly Family Physicians of Oregon magazine: Angels in Our Midst. Insuring Poor Health![]() Terry Thompson gets a treatment for her asthma An article by Nikole Hannah-Jones in the March 15th Oregonian describes the dilemma people find themselves in when they are unable to find work because of health problems, but unable to get help for these problems because of lack of insurance. Nikole became interested in this dilemma after hearing about it from Dr. Ginsberg, and the article features the story of one of the patients at North by Northeast.

An interview with Pastor Mary and Dr. Jill Ginsberg was aired in February 2008 as part of Portland Community Media’s Face to Face series. You can watch the video here. The November 23rd issue of the Jewish Review describes a presentation on volunteer opportunities in which Dr. Jill Ginsberg participated. An article by Kasey Cordell and Eric Gold in the November issue of Portland Monthly features all the Light A Fire Award winners, with a large spread on North by Northeast. An article by David Raths in the October 12 issue of the Portland Business Journal discusses the value of sabbaticals in helping employees contribute to the community and stay balanced as human beings. Dr. Jill Ginsberg’s upcoming sabbatical from her practice at Kaiser (starting in April) is highlighted. “During the sabbatical I will focus on recruiting more physicians and getting a staff person trained to help with the business end of things”. The Portland Observer covers Pastor Mary’s Woman of Achievement award and highlights some of her many community activities in its October 10, 2007 issue. Oregonian columnist S. Renee Mitchell marks our first anniversary in her August 15th column about the clinic. Oregonians for Health Security featured a story about North by Northeast in their June 21 Daily Dose (pdf). The May 15th Portland Jewish Review covered Dr. Jill Ginsberg accepting the second annual Rabbi Rose Tikkun Olam Award at the 149th annual meeting of Congregation Beth Israel. North by Northeast Community Health Center and our Medical Director and Co-Founder, Dr. Jill Ginsberg, were featured in the May 2007 issue of Metro Parent in an article entitled “How Local Moms are Changing the World”. KATU covered our special all day clinic on January 15th in honor of Martin Luther King Day. The clinic was staffed by volunteers from Kaiser, and we were able to help over 25 patients get needed medical care. The 2006 Willamette Week Give! Guide was an enormous success, bringing over $200,000 to 37 non-profits across the Portland area. This generosity benefited us as well. Read all about it in Richard Meeker’s February 3rd editorial. The Portland Development Commission’s recent Community Livability grants for the benefit of the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area includes over $6000 to improve disabled access at North by Northeast. The November 13th edition of the NY Times featured an article entitled A Doctor, a Pastor, and a Will of Steel, recounting the inspiring story of the clinic beginnings. The story is the work of two wonderful Portland women: journalist Judy Berck and photographer Julie Keefe. Pastor Mary Overstreet Smith, founding mother of the clinic and board member, received an Equal Opportunity Award from the Urban League of Portland on October 3rd. She spoke passionately about the work of the clinic in her acceptance speech. The Oregonian’s Erin Hoover-Barnett discussed our involvement in the community in a September InPortland article entitled “With Personal Touch, Free Clinic Fits Right In.” The Oregonian covered our opening in its August 18th, 2006 issue. In the June 12th edition of The Oregonian, a column entitled Get a Doctor, Get a Building, Get it going, by S. Renee Mitchell, ran on the front page of the Metro section. It highlights the work of Pastor Mary Overstreet and the partnership she and Dr. Jill have formed in working together on this project. The Portland Tribune’s Peter Korn wrote an article featuring the new clinic and focusing on the problems of the uninsured in our community. |
